Monday Muse: Earthships

I have recently fallen down a rabbit hole of Earthships and I may never surface again. The alien-structures, sustainable materials, closed-loop systems, and exotic locations of the Earthships has been calling my name and inspiring me for the last few weeks. I’ve been binging YouTube tours and researching how to make my own. What is an Earthship? It’s a mostly off-grid dwelling created from sustainable materials and in theory, would be completely self-sufficient. The Earthships often have solar panels, grey water recycling systems, hydroponic vegetable gardens, and walls made from recycled glass bottles. They are heated in the winter and cooled in the summer through efficient “Earthtubes” and often have little kitchens full of light and plants. They have an art and aesthetic all their own and look like something out of Tolkein’s Hobbit but produced by Gaudi and Dali after an acid trip. I can’t wait to visit the Earthship colony in Taos, New Mexico this winter. What do you think of Earthships? Would you stay in one, live in one, or even build one? I’m beginning to think stewarding my own Earthship (Earthship Stardust Coyote sounds nice!) is my life’s calling! What’ inspiring you this week?
